DreamWorks Animation/ACMI Mentoring Program

In 2014, I was one of five people in Australia to be selected for the DreamWorks Animation 'Designing Dreams Studio' mentoring program, in association with ACMI in Melbourne. During the 6-month program, we were mentored by DreamWorks director Steve Hickner (via video conference sessions at ACMI) and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Anthony Lucas (in person in Melbourne). For the program, we wrote and storyboarded a short film under their guidance.

This was a really rewarding experience as I learned so much about story, composition and filmmaking. The final animatic I created in the program can be viewed above. It tells the story of a messy and grubby child who befriends an overly neat and tidy older girl, much to the older girl's annoyance.

'Wicked Storyboards'

I created the above storyboards for the course 'Film On Paper', taught by Marvel story artist Justin Copeland. As part of the course, we had to choose a scene from a popular book or play, and recreate it. I chose this scene from the Broadway musical Wicked, which portrays the scene in which Galinda and Elphaba first bond.

‘Motherhood’ Comedy Storyboards

A short comedy sequence that I created.

‘Brady Bunch’ Parody Storyboards

A storyboard sequence that I created based on a parody of the Brady Bunch.

Graduate Film Little Big Hero Storyboards

Please click the left and right of the images to scroll through the pages.

The above pages are storyboards I created during the pre-production of my graduate student film, Little Big Hero. The film tells the story of Fettuccine, a grumpy donkey who enjoys his life of solitude in the forest. However, his life is turned upside down when toddler Scout enters the scene. Each day she brings new objects to decorate Fettuccine with, annoying him more and more. However, on the day Scout doesn't appear, Fettuccine finds himself concerned rather than relieved, and so sets off on a mission to find her.

The following boards are from the montage sequence of the film, portraying the daily comedic routine of Scout visiting Fettuccine and decorating him with objects. The sequence is heavily timing and music based, so the final version can be seen in the whole film here.

Australia for Dolphins Storyboards - Doolin's Story

Please click the left and right of the images to scroll through the pages.

The above pages are storyboards I created for the Australia for Dolphins short film, Doolin's Story. This animal welfare organisation asked me to create a short film for them, portraying the events of the Taiji dolphin drive hunts through the eyes of a baby dolphin.  The above scene portrays the opening of the film, in which the young son of the fisherman firsts meets baby dolphin Doolin. The completed film can be seen here. This scene was modified slightly for the final version, as it had to be cut due to time and budget constraints. However, I still really love this original version, and will hopefully be able to extend the film one day to include it.
